Photojournalist Maggie Walsh receives a tip that the Dalai Lama has died. Hoping for an important scoop, she travels to the Tibetan community in exile and confirms the story, but is detained before she can leave. There she meets a young monk, Tsering, who is preparing to enter Tibet in search of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation. Maggie joins the dangerous expedition, which develops into a race to find and protect the child while avoiding the Chinese authorities
