Ester is a former child prodigy from a wealthy family whose kleptomania eventually lands her in prison at the age of eighteen. For her protection she becomes known as Carleen, and spends two decades behind bars. When she is finally released, she returns to New York and finds work walking dogs in Manhattan’s wealthy neighbourhoods. As she tries to rebuild her life, she must confront her past while learning how to live in a world that has changed dramatically during her imprisonment.
